Women Inspiring and Empowering Women
The beautiful and talented @mindykaling posted last week on what @kamalaharris means to her and the impact that she has already had on #Black and #Indian women around the world.
Kamala as #VP would be a big deal for me. Growing up, I never had anyone that looked like me in high political office in #Canada or the #US and believe me - I noticed.
I was Student Council President of my high school. I remember going home and being so excited to tell my parents.
Instead of saying, “I'm proud of you”, they asked me, “how will this affect your grades?” They wanted to see the principal the very next day to undo this extra responsibility that they saw as “pointless”. I never let that happen.
Being Student Council President was the best thing that ever happened to me. I learnt so much in that position. I didn't understand my parents’ reaction at that time, but I understand it now.
Immigrant parents felt (and many still feel) that the only careers that can provide you with financial security are doctors, engineers, accountants, and lawyers.
Later that year, my dad saw how much I enjoyed my position in Student Council, and exclaimed how great it would be if I ran for office one day. My mom replied, “how many women (never mind Indian women) do you see in high politics positions?”
Seeing #KamalaHarris in high office has made me so proud and hopeful for the #future. This is a huge step forward for all the little girls who didn’t think a career in #politics was an option for them.
I’m so excited to see what is to come for Kamala. We can truly be anything we dream of. 💫

Posted @withregram • @mindykalingWas there ever more of an exciting day? For our entire country of course, but especially for my Black and Indian sisters, many of us who have gone our entire lives thinking that someone who looks like us may never hold high office. We work so hard and contribute to the fabric of America, and now to see someone as talented as @kamalaharris rise to the top like this? It’s thrilling!! I am filled with hope and excitement. Thank you @joebiden. Let’s do this!
